Movie Poster

week 1

10.01.2020

In our first class we were asked to recapitulate what we had learnt in first semester. It was very surprising to see how much I had forgotten.

We were given the option to either recreate or redesign a existing movie poster using both illustrator and photoshop. I chose one of my favourite movies “queen” to redesign its poster.

I mostly used the pen tool to make this movie poster.

The reference images that I used were –

Introduction to Indesign

week 2

17.01.2020

We started to learn a new software called Indesign. Indesign is an application used to make aligned pages from any publication. We learnt how to make facing pages, columns, baseline grids, creating master pages, numbering of pages, etc.

How to number a page?

We first go to the master page and then create a text box with a number. Then select the text-type-insert special character-markers-current page number.

Making master pages made a similar design on every page and created uniformity throughout the pages. This made me realize as to how much have a uniform pattern, uniform spacing and alignment for important for a publication to look good and professional.

We also learnt 4 ways of placing images on the page, creating frames and text boxes. Creating of frames were aides by the guides, grids and columns that we had made to give it a more structured look.

The software made it very easy to follow the same pattern and structure throughout the pages. It made the process way faster than many other softwares.

It was an interesting class. We were then given the assignment of creating two themed indesign files.

Text styling

week 3

24.01.2020

I was reviewed on my assignment, and I got to understand how everything can be aligned using baseline grids and columns. I was asked to make everything aligned.

Then we learnt about different text styles, text wrap, character styles and paragraph styles.

A paragraph style is important when you want many Text boxes in to have the same style. For example when the headings of all pages need to be similar.

A character style is when you need a different style to a particular character or word.

Text styles and paragraph styles

We also learnt how to write a text on a given path. We first make a shape or a patterned line using the shape tool or the pen tool and then use the type of path tool to do that. Sometimes the text cant be inverted which can be fixed by reversing the shape. We can also the align the text in different ways.

text on path

We had to bring two indesign files with a given theme to it.

The first booklet that I made was my fine arts portfolio.

I created three master pages using three different design styles. Three different paragraph styles have been used.

Process work for assignment

1.

Master page A
Master page B
Master page C

2. The second booklet that i made was the history of popart. I had only one master page and and used three different paragraph styles.

Final Booklets

week 4

31.01.2020

The final pdfs are attached below.

The feedback i received was that in portfolio i should number my page, and snap my text boxes. in the pop art file i was told to number both my pages and reduce the image border. Then i was also told to add blank pages and a contents page. An ending page was also required in both my files.

Story booklet

week 5

7.2.2020

We started with a new assignment of making a story book incorporating the stories and illustrations made in our integrative seminar and studio classes.

We had to come up with a basic layout as to how our story books will look like. Each one of us had to design a master page.

My master page was first made with grids and baseline grid. I changed the preferences in the baseline grid to make it shorter as my text was looking very spaced even after reducing its size. I added new ruler grids as i wanted all my texts to start from a specific line.

Later in the class we learnt new techniques in illustrator. We learnt how to text wrap and use appearances.

  1. text wrap- its how to shape a text with the given object. we have to make sure the object is in front of the text. Then-select both objects-object-envelope distort-make with top object. You ca edit the text by double clicking on it and change the colour or add gradient to it.
  2. appearances – its a type of how to make a text look like. You can also add a pattern to the text through appearances.

Text wrap and appearances.
Adding a 3d effect by multiplying the text.

Process for book

week 6

14.02.2020

I thought of working with typography for my story books as i wanted to add a header to introduce my stories in a artistic and beautiful way. For each story i made a a type art depending on the story line of the particular story.

This was the story based on the things lost in bermuda triangle. So i made a typography on the things that were lost in bermuda triangle as if it is fading away. I made outlines on the text, made it a compound object then added gradient.
This city was based on the city of illusion. Which is why the story of the name is reverse of illusion-noisulli. The typography depicts that too.
This typography was made on illustrator. this was based on the city of waste. So i wanted to create a effect of destruction and crumbling of letters.
I extracted this from my thumbnails, used levels and used paint brush.

Process work for story book

week 7

21.02.2020

In this class i came up with more of my typography art and compiled my illustrations into one.

I added few things to my headers further.

This was the final illustration i created using my drawings. I combines the two to make one. I used levels, copy pasted it by reversing few parts of the drawing, and used the brush tool to give a finishing overall effect.

Test prints

week 8

28.02.2020

In this class i showed my test prints. After taking my prints i realised a lot of things.

Firstly, the background white if my images did not match paper white, hence i had to change that using levels on photoshop.

Secondly, I had to space out my chapters by allowing the headers to be across an entire spread. While the story would start from the next page.

Thirdly, there were many unnecessary page numbers on certain pages.

Fourthly, i should make the contents font more interesting.

fifth, i didnt need a chapter number in the begenning.

After that i made changes to make my book more spread out and cohesive to look at.

For each story i added square images from my illustrations, aligning it my text which ends on the first page. Ive made the font size 11 and used paragraph and one character style for the beginning letter of every story. I redcued the size of my page numbers and removed them in places where an illustration was there.

i have aligned the illustration and text in the middle of the page to make it more aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.
i have aligned the image to the end of the text
i have created a typography art for places i didnt have an illustration to make it similar across all pages.
I added two images with equal spacing from the center.

The final pdf of my story is attached here-

Reflection of this project-

I have used a lot of typography art as i wanted to make my book very artistic and pleasing to the eye. I didn’t want to make it very text heavy and wanted it to be interactive. I have heroed my illustrations as they were very strong. At the same time I didn’t want the story’s importance to be taken away so i made the book well spread out, introducing each story with a header. Each story has a thumbnail describing the story so that its easier for the reader to visualize what i want to represent. I have made very interesting introductory pages so that my readers get very impressed at the very beginning and are willing to read my stories.

Final submission and coffee book table

6.03.2020

Week 9

We submitted the final bound story book. The inner pages were printed on a 130 GSM matte paper and the outer was printed on a semi glossy 300GSM paper. The binding technique used is perfect binding. This is how my story book looks like-

Reflection-

I got a perfect binding done from a shop in Kala Ghoda. Getting the perfect prints and binding them was not an easy task and it was my first. I had to understand the different kinds of papers that would be require to print for the inner pages and the outer pages. I had this in mind that I would get the inside pages printed on a 100gsm-130 gsm cartridge matte paper, for the ease of flipping and readability. While the outer cover would be thicker and would be approximately 300-350 gsm. The first and the most important thing that I learnt was to get a test print of my final booklet,as the first batch of prints that I got done turned out to be wrong as each page got printed in a full A4 and it costed me a lot. Hence a lesson to keep in mind next time. Overall making a full story book was a happy and a fulfilling journey.

Coffee book table-

I made two simple iterations for the cover of my jacket for the book. The idea i went ahead with was using the stamp coloumn as an typography for ‘I’.

Drawing iterations made for the jacket of the coffee table book.

I executed the same idea using a reference image for my stamp.

1.I image traced it, reduced the colours to 3 colours, expanded the object, deleted few colours and reducing the opacity of some colours to suit my backdrop.

2.Using a pen tool i drew and distorted the stamp column accordingly.

3. I downloaded a font called “faith collapsing” for the heading.

4. On ps used the wax stamp to replace the dot in the i and then set it to multiply.

I took a test print to see how the backdrop will look like once printed. After getting it printed i felt it was very flat. i was suggested to make the stamp coloumn stand out.

Test Print for the cover made

We learnt 6-7 usages of the pathfinder tool. We learnt how to unite, minus front, intersect, allignment etc.

Cover page

week 10

13.03.2020

I made 2 more iterations for my jacket cover design. Keeping the theme in mind which was seals and impressions I made a cohesive cover-

I added for details to my stamp column to make it stand out. I made darker tones using a pen tool.

Added more details to the column to make it stand out.

To make the coloumn stand out even more i decided

  • to use a seal image and convert it into a golden detail.(-Applied a golden yellow photo filter-bas relief filter -deleted background)
  • I copy pasted the golden design and changed the layer from normal to pin light.
  • added a thumb impression and gave a emboss effect along with multiply.
Final outer cover

For the back cover i decided to use a seal photo and image traced it. I expanded and using the direct selecting tooland deleted few colours.

I was inspired to make a cover which had a typography art as well as related to the theme of my Objects In history class object. My object was seals and hence i used a stamp to covert it into an ‘I’ for the word impressions. I also used a stamped wax symbol for the dot on top of i to make it relate to the theme. The font used was “they perished” to give a stamped look on a paper. The column has intricate patterns to give it a old and royal look. The thumprint was also used to indicate two themes- impression and identity which was one of the main purposes of seal stamps.

Content and Section Pages

Week 11

20.03.2020

In this class i designed my section page which was in form of a timeline. I used different layers to create and old map effect-

In this process i saw how to make a proper design using different layers and make them look pretty together by changing their opacity. This map gave a very ancient effect which suited my theme.

Bookmark and Section pages

Week 12

27.03.2020

I was asked to make another contents page which was simple and clear apart from my previous contents that was changed into my art page time line. This s the contents ive made on Indesign-

Two styles of fonts have been used- ‘Microsoft sans serif’ and ‘Baskerville Old face’

I made separate section pages for each Civilization using the ancient map that i had made and drew the civilization’s territory on it using a pentool –

Book mark made in the size 10″ by 2″. Used the same texture paper used for the ancient map-

This is the pdf file for the book mark-

Master Pages

Week 13

3.04.2020

I created 4 different master pages for the book –

I made 3 styles of master page for the written content part of the book to suit the different images that would be placed. On each of these master page the is a header with the book name, Section name and page Number. There are two fonts used.

Picture stylizations and Prototype

Week 14

13.04.2020

The instructions given to us eour professor was not to use direct images from the net and stylise t. hhence ive used two styles to render my image-

Process 1-Image traced it on Illustrator to give a black and white effect.

Process 2-Used the filter- Dark outlines on Photoshop, quick selection tool to select the object and paste it n a black background.

Few spreads –

Prototype-

For the purpose of understanding the binding techniques and where the layout will fall on what page, ive made a prototype of the book in size 5″ by 5″. There are 10 spread cutouts, hence 20 spreads. Ive used kettle stitch binding technique to bind my book as it helps in opening the book completely and information is not lost on the spine of the book while binding. Ive used 2 sheets to form one signature. Ive created 4 holes using a compass for the thread to pass through. Ive used cutouts from newspaper to understand the placing of the image and the text. Ive drawn the two column structure that ive been following in my book. I folded each 10″ by 5″ spread into half and had to make different pages on the wo different spreads as they were going to be folded and stitched. Hence i had to draw page 1 and page 6 on one spread and 2 and 5 on one spread.

Making the prototype helped me in learning a book binding technique. It was very easy and did not take much time, and i felt that i could easily use it for my next project and not rely on book binding shops. The prototype also helped me to understand what page will be placed on what spread for the final printing when the book is supposed to get binding.

Review

Week 15

24.04.2020

The final pdf of the book is attached below-

This entire book was a good outcome overall, i understood different layout styles in a book and also learnt a binding technique. I improved on few things like not distorting the image or the text at any given point. I also learnt how to make a book cohesive through basic use of colours.
